Shane Mosley prevailed from start to finish, knocking out cold Antonio Margarito for the first time in his boxing career in the 9th round Saturday night to capture the WBA welterweight title in a sensational upset.

Margarito was chipping off an impressive victory over antecedently unbeaten Miguel Cotto 6 months ago, and boxing experts had tabbed the 30-year-old hitter one of the top pound-for-pound fighters.

But Mosley must not have been paying close attention.

In spite of his advancing age, the 37-year-old Mosley applied his Lake superior quickness from the beginning, and Margarito never was able to exhibit the great power and fortitude he demonstrated against Cotto.

The bleeding come-from-behind, brutally spectacular 11th-round TKO did more than give Antonio Margarito his 3rd major title; it earned him a Top-10 pound-for-pound commanding by THE RING, Yahoo! Sports, and ESPN.com, and has led to this Jan. 24 showdown with Shane Mosley

The man he was sparring with, WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, appeared kinda average as he accompanied the 140 pounder around the ring and lost with wide looping punches.

After the session, Mitchell took deep breaths and assembled himself on the ring apron.

“Shane Mosley is one of my idols,” the Florida native said. “He was so quick and hefty and accurate, I wanted to be just like him. That’s why I box so much like him. But I’m concerned about him against Margarito.

“Margarito’s not like any battler I’ve ever sparred with. He’s not like Mosley. He does not have Shane’s instinctive talent, but he’s something special.”
